Between the rivers of the northern Iberian Peninsula – the Ebro and the Duero – the landscape has a rich history. The Soriano Natural Water Trail, or Camino Antonino, runs for 120 kilometres (75 mi) from Soria to Tudela in Spain. It passes through the Numantine grain steppe, the foothills of the imposing Moncayo between Zaragoza and Navarra, and the lands of the Ebro depression.
The region is a treasure trove of Celtiberian, Roman, Muslim and Castilian archaeology.
Some relics of these civilisations are still, in part, standing today, such as: the sites of Numancia and Masegoso; numerous Roman milestones and bridges; and Arab watchtowers. Furthermore, as its name suggests, water is present throughout the entire route, since the path runs along many sections through the channels of the Duero, the Tera and, above all, the Queiles.
The route reveals a rich tapestry of landscapes. To begin, you cross the Soria grain steppe and continue through the Moncayo foothills. You enter the leafy Queiles canyon – surrounded by cliffs – and end up in the Navarrese lowlands, with its blanket of bushes and various crops.
Much of the route follows the vestiges of the old Roman road Via XXVII. According to Antonino's itinerary, this ran between Astúrica and Caesaragusta, now known as Astorga and Zaragoza. This route also links the Duero and Ebro Nature Trails, GR-14 and GR-99.
In this Collection, I propose walking the Soriano Water Trail in six stages. Be surprised by the places and monuments you find each day. You can reach the start and endpoints – Soria and Tudela – by train or bus from almost anywhere in Spain.
The stages aren’t technically difficulty, but they do cover considerable distances due to the scarcity of accommodation, especially in Soria. For this reason, you need to carry wild camping equipment, for the first stage, for example.
Although it’s not necessary to wear boots, I recommend comfortable shoes with good soles. Dress in technical clothing, which is lighter and more efficient. Above all, remember to bring enough food and water for each walk; finding supplies is difficult in these lonely lands. Sunscreen and a hat are also essential to protect your head from the sun in sections where there’s no shade.
This route is ideal for the dry days of spring and autumn. In these seasons the fields, forests and bushes are dressed in vibrant colours and the temperatures are favourable. In winter and summer, the temperatures are more extreme.
Without further ado, I hope you enjoy linking the two great rivers of the northern peninsula on foot and discovering unforgettable treasures.
