The loop of the bastides and Gaillac vineyard is a four-day adventure, covering 140 kilometres (67 mi). Known for its exquisite wines, historic architecture and hilly landscapes, this Tarn region in the south of France is perfect for mountain biking.
The route starts in the town of Gaillac, where the paths cross vineyards as far as the eye can see. They take you to mediaeval bastides and traditional villages. Bastides – fortified towns typical of the Middle Ages – give you an insight into the region’s history and architecture. Towns such as Castelnau-de-Montmiral, Puycelsi and Rabastens, perched on rocky outcrops, offer breathtaking views of the surrounding area; you’ll spend the nights of your adventure here.
I’ve deliberately divided the route into short stages so you’ll have time for wine tastings and cellar visits. This adventure offers lots of opportunities to discover local grape varieties and winemaking methods. You can meet the makers, who’ll share their passion and their know-how with you.
At the end of each stage, you can enjoy the Tarn’s culinary specialities and local produce such as Lautrec pink garlic, Lacaune ham, caramelised bougnettes desert and even pumpkin milhassou (flan). Accommodation options vary, from rural lodges to boutique hotels to camping. As options are limited, remember to book well in advance.
The route is well signposted and suitable for mountain bikes, with varied paths ranging from forest trails to small country roads. Although the route doesn’t present great technical difficulties, it requires a good physical fitness to fully appreciate the climbs and descents through the Tarn.
The best time to undertake this loop is in spring and autumn, when the climate is ideal and nature offers its most beautiful colours. Although hotter, summer is when you can enjoy local festivals and a lively atmosphere in the villages.
To ensure you have a safe and fun adventure, make sure your mountain bike is in perfect working order. Carry a charged phone, energy bars and a water bottle. Sunglasses, sunscreen and a technical jacket for changing weather conditions are also essential.
Gaillac is very accessible from Toulouse and other major cities. You can easily take the train or arrive by car. All that remains is to wish you a great adventure on the great loop of the bastides and the Gaillac vineyards by mountain bike. It’s the perfect opportunity to combine cycling, nature, culture, gastronomy and winemaking!
