Also known as the "Pyrenean foothills route", the GR 78 follows in the footsteps of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, via the northern slopes of the Pyrenees. In all, it covers some 600 kilometres (373 mi) and 12,500 metres (41,000 ft) of ascent, crossing six départements. From Béziers to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, you’ll pass through Hérault, Aude, Ariège, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
This route is similar to a secondary route on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Although less frequented than the four historic routes, it is often considered to be the fifth way to Compostela. Unlike the via Tolosana, it flirts with the first peaks of the Pyrenees mountain range. It even goes deep into some of its valleys to discover authentic landscapes and cultures. From the plains of the Lauragais to the green hills of the Basque Country, you'll pass through numerous villages with histories stretching back thousands of years.
Faithful to its religious dimension, the route reveals emblematic monuments and places of worship. First, the history of the Cathars. Then it's on to the abbeys and centuries-old churches that punctuate your route to Lourdes. The sanctuary and grotto of Lourdes are renowned the world over – its water source, reputed to be healing, attracts thousands of believers every year. Finally, in the Basque provinces, the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela will guide you to the finish line.
Along the way, you'll pass through protected natural areas. These preserved sites offer a surprising and interesting variety of landscapes. Like natural habitats, they are home to numerous animal and plant species, many of them endemic.
This Collection takes you through the entire route in five sections ranging from 100 to 150 kilometres (60-93 mi). Note that the official route is extended on either side to connect with railway stations. You'll also find them in each of the finish towns of the five stages. Each stage takes between one and two weeks to complete. The entire route takes between two and four months, depending on your walking ability and the pace you choose.
Along the way, there’s a wide range of accommodation on offer. Depending on the time of year and the destinations you choose, I’d advise booking in advance. Responsible wild camping is also tolerated throughout the itinerary.
Although it’s possible for most of the year, the most pleasant time to enjoy this route is from June to October. The days are longer and sunnier and, on the higher sections of the route, you won't be hampered by the presence of snow during the summer months. As far as equipment is concerned, make sure you have warm, waterproof clothing at all times of the year. Of course, you can adjust your equipment according to the season, but bear in mind that the Pyrenees are notorious for their unpredictable weather, especially in the mountains. In the Basque country, it's often said that all four seasons can occur in the same day.
Have a superb adventure at the foot of the Pyrenees!
