This two-day adventure between Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry guides you on the slopes of the Bauges massif, with superb views of Lake Bourget. This is a simple but glorious getaway that takes you from the city to the mountains for a weekend escape.

Your journey begins in Aix-les-Bains on the banks of Lake Bourget. Less than an hour and a half from Lyon, this spa town has many attractions. Its mild and pleasant climate makes it enjoyable year round. It’s the second largest spa resort in France and has many places to relax and unwind, including Roman remains, museums, a casino, hotels and balneotherapy.

This Collection combines a charming city with the mountains near Les Bauges. The massif, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has preserved its natural landscapes. The route explores the southwestern part, from Mont Revard to the summit of the Monts via Féclaz.

The first day has the most climbing, with a beautiful, long ascent along a former cogwheel railway line. From the top, you can enjoy the plateau and the magnificent views of the blue waters of Lake Bourget. You can easily personalise your adventure and wild camp near La Féclaz or book accommodation in the resort’s hotels and guesthouses.

The walk ends in Chambéry. Known as the ‘City of the Dukes’ it is full of listed historic monuments such as the Saint-François-de-Sales Cathedral and the Elephant Fountain. The heart of the city reminds travellers of the influences of Italian architecture.

The route is accessible to everyone, although you’ll need a good level of fitness for the climb to Revard. If you’re considering wild camping, plan your resupplies and water points accordingly.

This hike is ideal from May to October. On the second day you’ll find very little shade, so take sun protection. If you want to finish the hike with a swim, you could start in Chambéry and finish in Aix-les-Bains. Both cities have the advantage of being served by daily TER lines in the Rhône Alpes region.
