Dartmoor's Miles Without Stiles are stile-free routes that are suitable for those with limited mobility, riders of all-terrain powered mobility scooters, and families with younger children and pushchairs.
The routes have been put together by the national park's Recreation and Access Team, working with Dartmoor Wheelchair Access Group. Each route starts at a car park or place with on-street parking, and many also have visitor centres and/or toilet facilities, as detailed in each Tour description.
The Tours are incredibly varied, from the tranquil path alongside the River Erme in Longtimber Woods on the outskirts of Ivybridge to the wild and open moorland of the track between Princetown and Nun’s Cross and the Military Circular Road near Okehampton. The route to Haytor Quarry is particularly scenic in early summer when the lilies are in bloom on the quarry pool, and the route up to Avon Dam is just as spectacular in winter when the dam is overflowing as it is in the glorious summer months.
The Tours are also pretty well spread across the moor, so there should be something for most adventurers, no matter where you’re based or setting off from.
Each Tour has been given a difficulty rating by the Disabled Ramblers, with category levels ranging from 1 to 3 (easy to hard). For more information on these categories, visit: disabledramblers.co.uk/route-categories.
As with any excursion on Dartmoor, multiple layers and waterproofs are a must, no matter what the weather forecast suggests, as the weather can change quickly up on the moors and can often be more harsh than you might expect.
