Secret and wild, Corsica is a unique territory. In the heart of the Mediterranean, it has been shaped by many influences over the centuries. This rich historical heritage blends with raw and spectacular nature. Its welcoming paradisiacal beaches contrast with its rugged mountains. The island’s interior is home to deep valleys and mysterious maquis shrubland, with authentic villages dotted in between. Finally, its culture, its traditions and its gastronomy complete this natural jewel to perfection.
The island rises from the sea with impressive mountains that forge its character. Nicknamed the ‘island of beauty’, it’s a great playground for hiking and nature lovers. In the shadow of its iconic GR 20, the island boasts many trails that reveal a beautiful diversity of landscapes and atmospheres. Perfectly maintained and waymarked, they offer alternatives that are often less frequented but equally spectacular.
Three of them cross the island from east to west. Called ‘Mare a Mare’ (‘sea to sea’ in Corsican dialect), these routes explore the north, centre and south of the island. Each of them covers varied terrain that’s accessible to hikers of all levels.
You’ll also find two Mare è Monti (‘sea and mountain’) to the north and south. These itineraries harmoniously criss-cross the reliefs and coastline while delivering plenty of surprises.
Finally, the transhumance path is a 1,000-year-old trail taken by shepherds for centuries. From the plains of Fango to the mountains of Niolu, it transports you through time via exceptional landscapes.
In the Corsican mountains, the varied weather results in many climates. It’s not impossible to find snow in the middle of summer. The days can be as hot as the nights are freezing, so dress accordingly. The refuges are open year-round, but they’re only guarded from May to October. The opening dates are not defined in advance, so check the Corsica Regional Nature Park website for detailed information: pnr-resa.corsica. Most of the refuges offer half-board. Along the way, you’ll find a few opportunities to refuel. Take plenty of water, especially in summer. Outside of campsites and reception areas provided for this purpose, wild camping is prohibited in Corsica.
As far as equipment is concerned, a hiking rucksack is essential, as well as comfortable hiking shoes for the rocky sections. Hiking poles will help you on the climbs. Finally, bring purifying tablets or a water filter.
The purpose of this Collection is to complete the itinerary of Corsica's great hikes. For each adventure, you’ll find a link to a complete Collection that lists the stages and other important information. The means of access to the starting and finishing points are also indicated.
All you have to do is choose your next adventure!
