In Normandy, the heart-shaped department of Eure makes up for its lack of coastline with abundant charm. The Eure has preserved its abundant treasures in secret. On the doorstep of the Île-de-France region and hugged by the Seine-Maritime, Calvados, and Orne departments, this area is the historical and geographical core of Normandy.
Spanning 548 kilometres (340 mi) across seven stages, this Collection is a loop through the surrounding area's splendid gems. The region hides lush forests, myriad valleys and meandering rivers like the Seine. Cyclists who relish veering off the conventional path and countless hours of joyful pedalling will be especially happy here.
You’ll explore the opulent Beaumesnil and Champ de Bataille châteaux, splendid embodiments of the 17th century, the formidable Gisort fortress and the enigmatic grey tower of Verneuil d'Avre, an ancient keep. A visit to the grand Château Gaillard is a must, perched atop a chalk cliff, surveying the Seine's expanse. The Renaissance stained-glass windows in the church of Sainte-Foy in Conches-en-Ouche are also beautiful. Évreux, the start and end point, dazzles with its resplendent cathedral. Similarly, the covered market of Lyons-la-Forêt adds to the itinerary's distinct tapestry. The picturesque Norman half-timbered residences of Pont-Audemer and Bonay enrich the narrative of this captivating journey.
The town of Giverny is popular with visitors, and it’s easy to see why. Claude Monet's residence, now transformed into a museum, is this route’s crowning jewel. Within this tranquil, blossom-filled haven, the artist found inspiration for his famed depictions of water lilies. From the early 20th century until the 1930s, he passionately painted around 250 oil compositions, capturing the garden and the water lily pond.
Designed for all abilities, this Collection is accessible to all. You’ll find plenty of accommodation and train connections. The best season to visit the Eure is from April to October. Remember to pack waterproof clothing, as the Atlantic climate, while often mild, can also be rather damp.
The Eure boasts fantastic local cuisine, too. Relish the chance to savour an array of Norman delights, from andouille smoked sausage to Pont-L'Evêque cheese. Tuck into apple pie, poiré and delectable shortbread, and wash it all down with a glass of cidre.
Embark on a journey of joyous exploration and revel in the delights of the Eure.
Bonne Eure!
