King Alfred's Way is a 350km circular off-road adventure route through 10,000 years of history, connecting some of England’s most iconic sites. The name of the trail is inspired by Alfred the Great, who ruled the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex.
Using parts of the Ridgeway and South Downs Way, the trail is ideal for gravel bikes and can be ridden over a few days as a bikepacking trip. It also connects with the Thames Path and the North Downs Way riders’ route, so you can combine multiple routes into a longer escape. Finally got to this trip.
Planned it long time ago but to find 3 days around family, kids and work is sometimes hard. Excuses, I know. Plus have a good weather and strength to do so, more excuses.
Originally I wanted to do this week before, but had no bike ready on time and that was good not to go as there was music festival near Winchester, right on the route which would cause some issues while riding. Even this weekend there were leftovers from it, rubbish, fences, pipes, it would be crazy reroutes to go around plus camping in campsite were challenging as many fully booked or were not taking bookings..This is popular route as it is one the routes on Cycling UK, plus it is circular so many cyclists comes here to do full route, part of it or Ridgeway trail so you can meet many bikepackers, bikers, gravel riders, mountainbikers, walkers, dog walkers, family groups, couples enjoying these routes, anyone enjoying the nature.
You know it’s popular route for cycling when you see spare inner tubes in cafes you can buy or bottles left on route in front of the houses left by locals.I really enjoyed this trip, variety of the terrain, climbs and descents, scenery and views made it very enjoyable.
Its connecting few cycle routes, there is plenty of places to shop for supplies, places to stay for a night, campsites or great spots for wild camping.
I’m sure i will be riding some parts of it again.
Tag eins für King Alfred’s Way.
