The Landsker Borderlands Trail is a peaceful, rural hiking route meandering around the border of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire in South West Wales. Over around 60 miles (100 km), this adventure whisks you through historic landscapes past once-bustling quays, serene medieval churches, settlements that time forgot and the ancient remains of castles.
I’ve split this Collection into five stages between 10 and 13 miles (16–21 km) each. All sections are undulating but there’s nothing very steep, making the entire route suitable for any keen hiker.
You begin this adventure at Canaston Bridge just east of Haverfordwest, and follow the Eastern Cleddau river as it flows to Milford Haven. After taking in picturesque spots like Landshipping and Cresswell Quays, the trail leads away from the water across farmland to Whitland. Then, the route heads north over hills and along valleys to reach Llanboidy. From here, it turns west, leading you to the upper reaches of the Eastern Cleddau, which you follow all the way back south to the start.
While you can certainly hike this route throughout the year, I’d recommend walking between late spring and early autumn. This ensures you can make the most of long daylight hours, enjoy the multitude of colours and animals, and avoid the muddiest and wettest seasons. Nevertheless, the weather is changeable here no matter what month so always carry waterproofs just in case.
I’ve ended each stage in either a town with accommodation and food, or somewhere that you can feasibly catch a taxi from. However, the area is rural so research accommodation providers ahead of time and plan accordingly.
To reach Canaston Bridge, catch the 322 or 381 bus from Haverfordwest or Narbeth. Both have train stations with links to Carmarthen, Swansea and Cardiff.
